A person with knowledge of the details says San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills has had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The procedure was done Thursday in Dallas, the person tells The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no official announcement was made. There is no timetable for Mills return. Despite his injury, Mills has agreed to re-sign on a multiyear deal with the Spurs, according to reports. Contracts cant be signed until July 10. Mills emerged as a valuable backup to Tony Parker this past season and scored 17 points in the Spurs Game 5 victory over the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals that gave San Antonio its fifth championship. ATLANTA -- When Andrelton Simmons botched a grounder, the St. Louis Cardinals seized their opportunity. For the Atlanta Braves, it was another night of missed chances. Matt Carpenters two-run double that helped carry St. Louis past the slumping Braves, who shook up their lineup but still lost their seventh in a row, 4-3 on Monday. The Cardinals scored three runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of shaky defence by Atlantas Gold Glove shortstop. In fact, Simmons had a couple of plays that couldve been scored errors but were initially ruled hits. The second one was changed to an E-6 and turned out to be especially costly, leading to a pair of unearned runs. St. Louis built a 4-0 lead and barely held on to win the series opener. "It was big," Carpenter said. "Especially when we got out to a big lead, to be able to hold them off, that was big for us." Desperate for more offence, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez batted pitcher Aaron Harang eighth and put second baseman Ramiro Pena in the ninth spot. Pena had two hits, including a seventh-inning homer that brought the Braves within a run, but they couldnt overcome a 4-0 deficit. Juston Upton took a called third strike from Trevor Rosenthal to end the game with the potential tying run at second base -- Uptons fourth strikeout of the night and extending Atlantas woes with runners in scoring position. The Braves were 1 for 12 in those situations and are 6 of 51 during their losing streak, though Freddie Freeman saw some encouraging signs. "We hit some balls hard with runners on," he said. "We were in the game the whole game. We couldnt say that the past week." The last time the Braves had such a lengthy skid was May 21-28, 2012, when they dropped eight in a row. Their longest losing streak last season was four straight. Shelby Miller (4-2) got a shaky win, giving up six hits and two runs in five-plus innings. Trevor Rosenthal pitched out of trouble for his ninth save, giving up a leadoff single to Simmons. Jordan Schafer bunted the runner to second, but Pena flied out to right before Upton whiffed. Harang (3-3) took the loss, though he pitched much better than his previous start, when he was pounded for nine runs by the Marlins. This time, he gave up four runs in six innings but only two were earned. The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Peter Bourjos led off with a single before Mark Ellis grounded one off Simmons glove. The shortstop, looking to make a force at second, appeared to take his eyes off the ball as it skipped past him. After Miller bunted the runners to second and third, Carpenter doubled to right-centre to bring them both in. Matt Holiday followed with a hard liner past third baseman Chris Johnson to make it 3-0. "Those things happen," Harang said of Simmons error. "I told him not to be too hard on himself. Hes probably going to save my butt plenty of times this year." St. Louis added another run in the fifth on Bourjos RBI single, but Gonzalez challenged a call at third base that had seemingly given the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. Yadier Molinas bases-loaded grounder ricocheted off Harangs leg, right to Johnson at third. He caught it and blindly stepped back in search of the bag and managed to barely nick it, as the replay showed. The called was quickly overturned after a review of only 37 seconds. The Braves knocked out Miller in the bottom half of the sixth, the first three hitters reaching safely. The Cardinals went to the bullpen after Evan Gattis RBI single, and B.J. Upton followed with a sacrifice fly off Pat Neshek. Neshek escaped the jam by striking out Simmons. NOTES: The Cardinals sent pitcher RHP Joe Kelly back to St. Louis to continue his rehab from a strained left hamstring. "Joe just wasnt to the point where they thought they could push him, so keeping him around the rest of this road trip didnt make any sense," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I dont know Id call it a setback as much as he just wasnt progressing as quickly as we wanted." ... Atlanta RHP Gavin Floyd will make his season debut when he starts Tuesday against LHP Tyler Lyons (0-2) of the Cardinals. Floyd is coming back from Tommy John surgery and will start in place of Ervin Santana, who has a bruised right thumb. Fake Nike Shoes . Bryan Murray made an announcement after the GMs meetings - and as was reported by Pierre LeBrun a couple of weeks ago - that Jason Spezza wants a trade out of Ottawa. Whats the latest on that? Pierre LeBrun: Yes, he made it public. As you said, we talked about this for a couple of weeks but I think that Murray felt compelled to stop playing around with this. Its not a rumour. Jason Spezza wants out and Murray has taken calls from other teams. Nothing is imminent, and Murray believes that things will heat up around the draft. But in any package for Spezza, he wants a player that helps them now plus some futures - it will be a high asking price. The Stanley Cup Final is on but GMs are already focusing about next season. We expect Brad Richards to be bought out by the New York Rangers - what about Mike Richards by L.A.? Darren Dreger: Well the Los Angeles Kings dont plan on buying out Mike Richards because then they would have to replace him. But Mike Richards doesnt want to be a fourth-line centre next year for the Kings. The Kings are expected to push Richards in the off-season to improve his conditions and get a little bit stronger. But we also know that Richards is a strong and confident young man and he may not want to follow the path that the Kings want him to follow. So this could get very interesting. Is current Philadelphia Flyer Vincent Lecavalier soon to be an ex-Flyer? Dreger: Hes a fourth-line forward making $4.5 million and I cant believe that Ron Hextall is going to want to pay him that. So the word on the street is yes, Lecavalier most definitely is in play. But keep in mind that he has a no-move clause. I know that his agent Ken Hughes has already talked to Hextall about the possibility of moving his client. There are no specific teams yet, theres no list, but if they want to move him they are going to have to go to Vinny and identify a specific place. LeBrun: To the disappointment of many teams, one player who is not on the move is Shea Weber and IIm not sure why.dddddddddddd For whatever reason, his name pops up all the time as a trade target. David Poile, the GM of the Predators, after the meeting on Wednesday said, "I am never trading Shea Weber." Hes not going anywhere, theyre building their team around him...thats the end of it. Dan Boyles rights are owned right now by the New York Islanders. But could he end up a Toronto Maple Leaf? Dreger: The Toronto Maple Leafs are high on Dan Boyles list. Hes expected to alert Islanders GM Garth Snow at some point this week as to whether or not he intends to negotiate with the Islanders with the possibility of staying there after New York made the trade for his negotiating rights. I know that the Islanders have already made an offer but there is no negotiation. Boyle wants a two-year deal, and the money might be more than the Leafs are willing to pay but they definitely have interest. LeBrun: Speaking of money, the Chicago Blackhawks are going to open the vault again for Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Chicago GM Stan Bowman told us today that he wants them signed by July 1. He has to set up his entire off-season and his cap room by knowing how much these guys will make. Hes optimistic that these deals will get done shortly between now and July 1. Bob Nicholson has left Hockey Canada, but we will find out shortly what his new job is going to be. Dreger: Yes, very soon news will break that Bob Nicholson is jumping into the National Hockey League. He left Hockey Canada and will join the high ranks of an NHL team in a high executive capacity - above the level of president and below that of an NHL owner. But hes joining the NHL. The NHL GMs discussed the draft lottery and possibly changing the odds, but is there no consensus just yet? LeBrun: Well it was sort of a confusing day. We spoke to Tim Murray of the Buffalo Sabres who said he was relieved, because he has three first-round draft picks in 2015 and his understanding is there wont be changes to the lottery before then. But we heard from league sources that its still possible that Bill Daly and commissioner Gary Bettman will make a proposal to the Board of Governors in less than two weeks. So its up in the air at this point. ' ' '

Two days ago our Farhan Lalji reported that one of the greatest receivers in CFL history, Geroy Simon was calling it a career. Since Farhans tweet, there have been all kinds of speculation as to why Simon would hang them up now, when as recently as a month and a half ago he indicated that he felt like he could play at least one more year. The rumour getting the most traction is that he wasnt offered enough money by Saskatchewan GM Brendan Taman to make another year worth his while. However, sources very close to the situation said on Sunday night that this decision had nothing to do with money. The recent talks between the Rider GM and Simon went fine and did not factor into his decision. Information which makes sense because in all my discussions with the CFLs yardage leader throughout the years he has never made decisions based on money, and there is no reason to think he would start now. Simon was trending on Twitter shortly after it was known that he was retiring, including tweets from many fans wondering why he wouldnt sign a one day contract with the Lions and hold the press conference in BC, since he played there the majority of his career there and racked up 14,756 of his 16,352 career yards as a Lion. Retiring with the team youve played for the bulk of your career with has become ordinary practice for most athletes in all sports. However, since entering the league with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Simon has been anything but ordinary, and has followed his own path. Last year he played for the Roughriders, and his best game of the season was the most important game of the season, when he had two touchdown catches in the Grey Cup against Hamilton, so he will retire a Rider. As for whether or not he could end up on another roster and play one more year in a different city, a source said as of Sunday night Simon had not heard from any other team in the league. While it seems shocking that teams wouldnt at least contact him to gauge his interest in playing somewhere else, we shouldnt read into the lack of interest too much. First, Simon hasnt made it official, and until papers are filed to the league he is still a Roughrider. Also dont be surprised to hear that No. 81 may be hanging up his jersey, but isnt going to leave football, and that information may have already leaked to the other teams in the league. He still has gas in the tank and could help a young team like Ottawa for instance, and I consider myself one of many who think he could play at least one more year. However, it sounds like hes decided its time to make the transition into the next phase of his life, and once you have retired in your mind you are not going back, so it will be interesting to see what his new role in the game will be. As initially reported, the official press conference will be held sometime this week in Regina, and will mark the end of the playing career of the most productive receiver in CFL history. But as good as Simon was as a player he is even a better person, and will be successful in anything he does in the future. As I mentioned, it sounds like he will stay in football for now, but I know from previous conversations with him that he would be interested in exploring TV and I for one would welcome him with open arms to our team at TSN, if that opportunity ever presented itself. He also has other interests and business partners away from the game, and you can bet there will be lots of open doors in the corporate world for Simon if he chooses to go that route. I mean, who wouldnt want to hire Superman.   Soccer Jerseys 2020 . ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Though his physical condition is no longer a big question mark for Peyton Manning, when he looks around at training camp, he must feel like hes starting over again. Manning lined up for his first snaps Thursday behind an offensive line that has been shuffled, in front of a running back who took only about 25 per cent of the snaps last year and looking down the line at some pass catchers, who 12 months ago, were either bit players or playing somewhere else. The quarterback who thrived on the familiarity of playing with the same receivers -- Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison -- same tight end -- Dallas Clark -- and same running backs -- either Edgerrin James or Joseph Addai -- year after year in Indianapolis, is now having to adjust to a revamped offensive roster to start his third year in Denver. Bottom line: "Just because you did certain things last year means nothing as far as this upcoming season," Manning said. "Ive always felt the NFL does not owe you anything." But even by an NFL rosters constantly shuffling standards, the Broncos did some major reorganizing around their franchise quarterback -- the 43-8 loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl exposing too many problems for the AFC champions to stand pat. The line will be different with the return of Ryan Clady at left tackle and the shifting of Orlando Franklin, who had a poor Super Bowl, from right tackle to left guard. Montee Ball will replace Knowshon Moreno at running back. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Sanders replaces Eric Decker at receiver. And just to accentuate the feel Thursday, former No. 5 receiver Andre Caldwell was getting reps in place of Demaryius Thomas, who was excused to attend his grandmothers funeral. "Were certainly looking for continuity and chemistry with the new players," Manning said. "Every year you have to establish that particular teams identity. Were in the process of doing that right now." John Elway, who put this roster together, said he hopes part of the new identity will take some of the focus off Manning, much the same way he became less of a focal point in his final years, which produced his two Super Bowl wins. "I think that weve got to get to be where were a complete football team," Elway said. "We cant rely on 18 to win it because he cant win it by himself." While Elway was talking more about his off-season revamp of the defence, he has also been making plenty of moves to shore up the parts around Manning, who set records for yards (5,477) and touchdowns (55) last season and also won his fifth Most Valuable Player Award. Ball, last years second-round pick, is viewed as a long-term prospect at running back. The Broncos spent this years second-round pick on receiver Cody Latimer, in the hopes hell be catching passes from Manning and his successor for years to come. In practice Thursday, Manning looked often toward tight end Julius Thomas, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound pass catcher with whom the Broncos are hoping to sign a long-term contract extension. "An important part of the team this year," Manning called him. And a familiar one -- something Manning almost certainly didnt think hed be searching for this hard come Year 3 with the Broncos. "Thats probably the worst thing about football, is when you lose great players from the previous year, who are also great guys," Manning said. "Well certainly miss guys like Eric and Knowshon -- guys youve played in a lot of big games with, guys you put a lot of sweat and work in with in this facility and this weight room. "But its an opportunity for other guys to step up." BEREA , Ohio (AP) — Wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry are elite NFL players and quarterback Baker Mayfield is the most popular athlete in Cleveland.Their star power at Browns training camp has been magical for fans — and for the team’s defense, which has been turned invisible by their presence.“Our offense has a lot of weapons, we know that, and it’s exciting for everyone,” rookie cornerback Greedy Williams said Saturday after practice. “But at the end of the day, you’ve got to have defense to win.“We don’t care what anybody is saying about us or not saying. Our defense just comes out every day and tries to make things better for all of us by competing as hard as we can.”Cleveland allowed the third-most yards in the NFL last season and ranked in the bottom quarter of the league against the pass and run. Major changes followed as interim coach/defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was not retained and starters Jamie Collins, Emmanuel Ogbah and Jabrill Peppers were sent packing.General manager John Dorsey subsequently added Pro Bowl defensive end Olivier Vernon from the Giants, defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson from the Vikings, and safety Eric Murray from the Chiefs. The Browns’ top two draft picks were Louisiana State product Williams and Brigham Young linebacker Sione Takitaki.“We have the best of both worlds Jarvis Landry Jersey , but defense wins championships,” said defensive end Myles Garrett, the No. 1 overall selection in 2017. “We’ve seen that many times throughout the years and it’s never going to change. If they can’t score the ball and we can, then we’re going to win every time.”The defense held its own on the third day of camp, ending the three-hour, full-pad session with Murray’s pick-6 of backup Drew Stanton. Williams had a pair of interceptions Friday and the new-look line appears to be jelling quickly, though it continues to fly under the radar.First-year coach Freddie Kitchens and new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks have no problem with that side of the ball being ignored around the NFL. Nor does Garrett.“It doesn’t bother me at all because I don’t mind not getting any attention,” Garrett explained. “I don’t mind it on the field, either. If you don’t want to block me Genard Avery Color Rush Jersey , I’ll be willing to take the sack, too. I’m not a spotlight kind of guy. The offense can have all of that.”Even when the defense wins an 11-on-11 play, the offense is often the focal point. Case in point: Mayfield used very strong language to chew out his receivers for not extending their routes when he was flushed out of the pocket.Starting linebacker Christian Kirksey felt compelled to yell to the crowd, “That means the defense is looking good.”Kitchens plans on keeping the team in pads indefinitely and will permit tackling to the ground soon. When the latter occurs, the defense will be a focal point, whether it likes it or not.“This time of year in the NFL, you’re either going to get exposed or you’re going to get exposure,” Kitchens said. “Getting exposed means you probably aren’t going to be here when the calendar turns to September.”NOTES: RB Duke Johnson (right hamstring) did not practice after limping off the field Friday, and RB Kareem Hunt (groin) remains on the active/non-football injury list. Cleveland signed RB A.J. Ouellette for depth. “Duke is a quick healer , but we need to make sure this injury doesn’t linger,” Kitchens said. “It’s kind of a day-to-day thing.” . Beckham continued to impress his teammates by making a number of one-handed catches. “He’s one of the greatest I’ve ever seen at that position,” Williams said. . Former Browns QB Brian Sipe, DT Jerry Sherk and G Robert E. Jackson addressed the squad on the field. “Our guys can see the passion from our fans, but I also want them to know about the history of the Cleveland Browns,” Kitchens said. The Browns threatened to run away with their game against the Bills early. Already leading 6-0, the Browns reached the Buffalo 1-yard line on their second drive. But the Browns were turned away with no points despite seven snaps from the 1-yard line and another from the 2.Bills safety Jordan Poyer was called for pass interference on Odell Beckham on the first play from the 1-yard line, resetting the downs. Nick Chubb lost a yard to the 2-yard line and then gained a yard to the 1-yard line on the next two snaps.Tre'Davious White was called for pass interference on Beckham on third down, resetting the downs yet again.Chubb was stopped short on first down; Baker Mayfield misfired on a pass to Beckham in the end zone; and Chubb was stopped for no gain on third down.On fourth down from the 1-yard line Nick Chubb Jersey , Freddie Kitchens elected to go for it and Chubb was stopped for a 2-yard loss.Defensive tackle Corey Liuget, Shaq Lawson, White, Poyer and Tremaine Edmunds all came up big for the Bills on the goal line.Officially, it was a 14-play drive, the Browns’ longest of the season, plus the two pass interference penalties. So the Browns got 16 chances to score. They didn’t.The Browns remain in the lead 6-0 at the start of the second quarter.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Matt Every is finally a winner on the PGA Tour, and hes still not sure how it happened. He was nine shots behind Masters champion Adam Scott going into the weekend at Bay Hill. He was still four back of the Australian he referred to as a "stud" going into the final round Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Every figured even par over the last three holes would do the trick. He made two bogeys. Even after a hearty handshake from the tournament host and a shiny trophy an arms length away from, Every summed up this wild day with just the right words. "I ... I ... I cant believe I won," he said. "I just ... I really cant." The tee shot that he feared might be out-of-bounds on No. 9 somehow bounced along a cart path and led to an unlikely birdie. He surged to a three-shot lead when Scotts touch with the putter vanished. Even with two bogeys on the last three holes -- he missed a 4-foot par putt on the 18th -- Every still closed with a 2-under 70. The last bogey made him sweat out the finish. Keegan Bradley, who birdied the 16th and 17th holes, had a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff. It was similar to the putt Tiger Woods has made so often to win at Bay Hill. Bradleys putt stayed left of the hole, and he finished one shot behind. Every finished at 13-under 275, one shot ahead of Bradley, who needed two late birdies for a 72. Scott was third. David Hearn (74) of Brantford, Ont., finished in a tie for 52nd at 1-over par. In his 92nd start as a pro on the PGA Tour, Every finally won at just the right time and just the right place. The 30-year-old who grew up 90 minutes away in Daytona Beach used to come to Bay Hill as a kid to watch the tournament. And he beat the Masters champion to earn his own spot in the Masters next month. "Being close to winning out here, it can be kind of discouraging because if you dont win, you just wonder if its ever going to happen," Every said. "And sometimes you tell yourself, Well, maybe its meant to be somewhere else, somewhere better. I dont see how it could get much better than this -- being so close to where I grew up and all the fans out there that were cheering me on. It was awesome." It was a nightmare for Scott. He shattered the Bay Hill record by taking a seven-shot lead after 36 holes and still led by three shots over Bradley going into Sunday. His putting stroke betrayed him. Scott made only five bogeys over 54 holes. He made five on Sunday alone. And he didnt make a birdie over the last 14 holes for a 76. "Im annoyed that I didnt do better today," Scott said. "Sometimes youve got to be hard on yourself. Sometimes you dont. And I think I was getting into a really good spot, and an opportunity here to run away with an event and really take a lot of confidence. Im taking confidence anyway, from just some good play. But some opportunities youve got to take." Cocky by nature, Every choked back tears when he realized he had won. "Its hard," he said, stopping to compose himself. "Its tough, man. You just never know if its going to happen. You get there so many times. Its nice to get it done." He made it hard on himself. Every had a three-shot lead on the par-5 16th hole -- the easiest at Bay Hill -- when he drove into the woods, hit a tree trying to pitch out, laid up short of the water to play it safe and had to grind out a bogey. Scott, playing in the final group behind him, drilled 6-iron to 20 feet for an eagle putt that would have tied him for the lead. He three-putted for par. It was the second time in six tournaments that Scott lost a big lead on the last day. He had a four-shot advantage in the Australian Open and lost on the final hole to Rory McIlroy. This time, he didnt even have a realistic chance playing the 18th. "I really think the putting has let me down on both of those occasions," Scott said. "Today was a bit shaky. But this course was asking a lot of everyone today, and my short game just wasnt there. So that needs to be tightened up and probably shows that I need to do a bit more work on it to hold up under the pressure." Scott finished alone in third. He had to win Bay Hill to reach No. 1 in the world ranking when he arrived at Augusta National. Now, the No. 1 spot that Woods has held for the last year will be up for grabs at the Masters among Woods, Scott and Henrik Stenson, who tied for fifth at Bay Hill. Until Sunday, about the only time Every made news on the PGA Tour was when he was arrested and jailed on a misdemeanour drug possession charge at the 2010 John Deere Classic after agents were called to a casino hotel because of a strong odour of marijuana coming from the room he was in. Every paid the price with a three-month suspension that kept him from retaining his PGA Tour card. He once said earning his card back was his greatest achievement, though that sure takes a seat back to his win at Bay Hill. "Its just cool that I can say that I won on the PGA Tour," Every said. "But I always felt like my game was plenty good enough to win out here." By the time Mark Murphy and Brian Gutekunst slid Mike McCarthy his pink slip , the traits that had catapulted the Green Bay Packers out of the early 2000’s doldrums appeared all but gone. The offensive mind that reinvigorated Brett Favre, the technician who refocused an aging Hall of Famer while building up a future one, that coach was no longer patrolling the sidelines at Lambeau. Whether or not that coach still exists inside McCarthy will have to be adjudicated by teams like the Jets and Browns, who are considering making him their next head man. But McCarthy’s impact was far more robust than an offensive infusion. He set a tone, a culture in Green Bay, one Mike Sherman never quite captured. Mixing a blue collar ideology with the rich history of the Packers requires a delicate balance. They don’t hang division title banners at Lambeau Field. He worked tirelessly to incorporate modern training techniques into the organization, from nutrition to energy monitoring and speed analytics. At his peak, McCarthy was both a great leader and a great offensive coach, one of the best designers of offense in the league and a top playcaller. Whether he was any of those things by the end doesn’t matter anymore. The Packers have to try to replace both, a task that is proving to be extremely difficult.Looking at the candidates the Packers will consider, most fall into one of two buckets: offensive mind, or tone-setter. It’s hard to find a coach who can confidently be called both. Chuck Pagano, Mike Munchak Dean Lowry Jersey , Dan Campbell, Pat Fitzgerald — these coaches are clearly on the list because of the respect they engender from the players they’ve coached and their ability to lead, to set the tone. Pagano and Fitz bring defensive-minded coaching skillsets, an area where Green Bay could surely stand to improve, but the real draw is re-engaging a locker room lost by McCarthy for myriad reasons. One the other side are coaches like Jim Caldwell, Josh McDaniels, Matt LaFleur, and Pete Carmichael, men with track records of success architecting elite offense, but none with the kind of demeanor or coaching prowess as the proverbial leader of men. Caldwell is infamous for his near catatonic sideline posture, while LaFleur has essentially no track record as the leader of anything. Carmichael too, while a highly respected coach, has the benefit of Drew Brees and Sean Payton to command the room.McDaniels has the potential to be the outlier here Kentrell Brice Color Rush Jersey , potentially one of the reasons he’s so coveted by the Packers. He’s been on the record about his missteps in a brief stint with the Broncos, and the Patriots organization took extraordinary measures to keep him amid a courtship with the Colts last offseason. For whatever character flaws one might see in backing out of a handshake agreement, the Patriots, with the best winning culture in football, saw something so profoundly valuable in McDaniels that they broke unspoken NFL rules and made McDaniels the highest paid coordinator in history to woo him back. If he can take some of the lessons learned from his time in Denver and apply them to his first-hand experience at the side of Bill Belichick, there’s a chance he can be both the innovative offensive mind and the right cultural tone-setter for this team. But that’s an awfully big “if.” Perhaps leaders like Tramon Williams, Aaron Rodgers, Mike Daniels and emerging stars like Davante Adams and Jaire Alexander can bring the team forward, pushing it toward a more cohesive unit. Given how many culture leaders dot the Packers’ coaching list however, Mark Murphy and Brian Gutekunst clearly believe more is needed from the head coach. It can be true that Mike McCarthy’s time in Green Bay had run its course, that his message had grown stale, and that his presence will be difficult to replace. Few coaches in the sport at their best could match McCarthy’s ability to head a team with his offensive prowess with the Packers at their peak. But the Packers are no longer at their peak, and it will take a new voice to get them back. It’s not hard to look at the coaching list and realize just how difficult that task will be. Former Packers linebacker Antonio Morrison had a rough month of March.A week before being released by the Packers , Morrison was cited for interfering with a flight from Milwaukee to Las Vegas.Via Michael Cohen of, a flight attendant questioned passengers about the placement of a bag under a vacant seat. Morrison, who later admitted that he placed his bag there because someone else had placed a bag under his seat, initially refused to acknowledge whether the bag was his.“F–k you,” Morrison allegedly said. “You don’t own this plane. I can do whatever I want.”The pilot took the plane back to a gate at the airport, and Morrison exited to speak to a Deputy Sheriff.“Morrison stated he did not feel he needed to explain why his bag was under an empty seat and thought the explanation [about] whose bag was good enough,” the police report states. “During this time Morrison was cursing casually with me and could not complete a sentence without the word f–k.”Morrison arrived in Green Bay last year, via a trade with the Colts. He appeared in all 16 games, starting eight.Cohen writes that it’s unclear whether the Packers knew about the citation before cutting him. A no-contest plea was entered last week.

KANSAS CITY Jacoby Brissett Jersey , Mo. — Given the postseason history involving Indianapolis and Kansas City over the years, Andrew Luck and the Colts have every reason to feel confident heading to Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday. The Chiefs have every reason to believe they’re due.Four times the teams have met in the playoffs, twice in the wild-card round and twice with a spot in the AFC title game on the line. Each time the Colts emerged victorious. All but one were down-to-the-wire nail-biters, one a record-setting shootout and another a defensive slugfest, and each left Colts fans feeling euphoric and Chiefs fans feeling cursed.Asked whether he understood the magnitude of the next installment in the one-sided series, Chiefs cornerback Kendall Fuller replied quite simply: “Oh, yeah.”“Especially what they’ve been going through over the years and things like that,” he said. “We definitely see how fans feel, what they’re expecting and stuff like that.”There was the 1996 wild-card matchup in which Chiefs kicker Lin Elliott missed three field goals and the Colts won 10-7. The divisional showdown in 2003, when the Colts won 38-31 in a game featuring no punts. The 23-8 whitewashing three years later and, most recently, the 45-44 shootout in which Luck led the Colts from a 38-10 second-half hole to beat Andy Reid’s first Chiefs team in 2013.There are still more than a dozen players around who were involved in that game five years ago, yet each acknowledged this week that history has no bearing on what will transpire Saturday .“Obviously, they are a great team,” said Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri, who has played in the past two playoff games against Kansas City. “They’ve won a lot of games. They’ve got a very explosive offense. They’ve got probably the best returner in the National Football League with (Tyreek) Hill.“We are going to have to play our best game,” Vinatieri said, “to try to keep up with them.”The Chiefs happen to believe the same thing.Yes, they earned the No. 1 seed with their third consecutive AFC West title, and have arguably the game’s best young quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. Hill joins Travis Kelce, a healthy Sammy Watkins and running backs Spencer Ware and Damien Williams in giving him plenty of weapons, while a defense that’s been statistically poor also has more sacks than any other team.Yet the Colts, the sixth and last seed in the playoffs, may be the hottest team playing. They rebounded from a 1-5 start to win nine of their last 10 games to reach the postseason Reggie Wayne Color Rush Jersey , then dominated the Houston Texans last week with a bludgeoning ground game and stingy defense .“The way this locker room has prepared,” Luck said, “it’s all about just getting better, getting better. … It takes no heroes. You don’t need a hero, whether it’s a playoff game or a regular-season game. It’s just everybody doing their jobs that get things done.”Of course, having a little playoff karma never hurts. The Colts certainly have that when it comes to Kansas City, while the Chiefs believe they long ago hit their quota of misfortune.“All of us feel like we are here now and focused on the present day,” Mahomes said, “and we feel like we have a different team, and that we can go out there and win a big football game.”SPEAKING OF MAHOMESColts coach Frank Reich played 13 seasons in the NFL and has spent most of the past decade working with quarterbacks. And he had high praise for Mahomes, who shattered just about every Chiefs passing record this season.“I’ve heard people use the term ‘generational arm talent.’ I think that’s really true,” he said. “As a former quarterback, I don’t say that about too many people. I don’t throw that term out real easily. I think he’s a legit generational arm talent.”MACK TRUCKColts running back Marlon Mack ran for a franchise-playoff-record 148 yards in their 21-7 win over the Texans. Now he gets to face a Chiefs rush defense that was last in the NFL in just about every statistical category. “I think that’s an indication of how our entire offense played,” Luck said. “It’s a combination of Marlon and the offensive line.”FAMILIAR FACESMuch of the credit for the Colts’ turnaround belongs to general manager Chris Ballard, who worked in Kansas City’s front office before taking over in Indianapolis. It was Ballard who orchestrated two solid drafts and rebuilt the Indy defense. “I’m not surprised,” Reid said. “He’s got the energy to go get it. The energy and the eye to see it and go get it. That’s important.”WHAT A RUSHChiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones had 15 1/2 sacks this season, while linebacker Dee Ford has 13 sacks and seven forced fumbles. But one of the most productive rush tandems in the NFL should have its hands full with an offensive line that allowed sacks on a league-low 2.7 percent of pass plays. “We’re ready for the challenge,” Ford said.HEALTH CHECKColts wide receiver Ryan Grant (toe) has been ruled out, while defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis is doubtful with a knee injury. The big question for the Chiefs is strong safety Eric Berry, who practiced only once this week with a recurrence of the heel injury that sidelined him much of the season. He was listed as questionable on the final injury report.100<button class="view-gallery">View Gallery</button> Gallery:View from the sidelines: NFL cheerleaders 2018Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports | Raj Mehta In the immediate aftermath of Saturday night’s stunning news that Colts quarterback Andrew Luck had retired from football, mixed messages emerged regarding when the team knew it could happen. Rumors flew that they knew since March; the team privately insisted that they found out only this week.Looking back at the information that emerged in the aftermath of the announcement, there’s reason to believe that the team had known, at least for a little while.Asked whether he tried to talk Luck out of retiring, Irsay provided an explanation that strongly hints at this not being a bolt from the blue.“I again tried to be the best sounding board I could for him ,” Irsay told reporters. “As a father of children that are older than him, you know, life has its spiritual journey, people. I mean this is, you know, this stuff is kind of a ‘bigger than all of us’ sort of issue. And I would never try to talk someone out of something that their heart truly wasn’t into. And so I was there to aboslutely support him and counsel him. .” (Emphasis added.)This clearly implies that Irsay initially told Luck to take some time. Which also implies that it didn’t first come up on a Monday, with a final decision made five days later.Indeed, Irsay’s explanation meshes with the idea that Irsay, at a minimum, knew that Luck was wrestling with a decision that didn’t absolutely, positively have to be made until the team commenced full and final preparations for the regular-season opener.Likewise, consider these August 14 quotes from coach Frank Reich, which were made when everyone believed that Luck’s calf/bone/high-ankle issue were the impediment and not angst regarding whether to continue to play at all: “By the end of the third preseason game, you have to know something. You have to be able to make a call and move from there in whether we’re full speed with Andrew after that third preseason game or if at that point we’re going with Jacoby. We’ll make that decision with that when the time comes.”Maybe that’s when the Colts wanted Luck to provide his final decision. Regardless, that’s when he did.Even if the Colts didn’t know before this week, former Colts assistant coach Clyde Christensen had an inkling.“I stay in touch with him and kind of knew that he was contemplating it,” Christensen told Rick Stroud of the .If Christensen knew, others knew. And someone with the Colts surely knew. But why make it known until Luck makes a final decision? In hindsight, it’s amazing no one blabbed while Luck was simply trying to make a decision. Regardless, it sure seems like this one was percolating for a while. The question will now be, for the next four or five years perhaps, whether a decision to return is percolating.

The OffseasonThree positions of concern on the Seahawks’ rosterNew,26commentsPDTGeneral Managers talk about heading into the draft with no holes on the roster. They then look to add to their roster and have a vicious 90-man offseason competition, before finally having a terrific 53-man unit. In truth, it never works out quite like this. But some teams have positions that are visibly areas of concern in terms of depth and talent. The Seattle Seahawks, following somewhat of a rebuild year in 2018, still have some positions that warrant angst. Years of mediocre-to-bad drafting has seen roster holes enlarge. The competition for these roles should be particularly fierce as a result“This was not a draft we went into with big holes on our team, we didn’t feel like that,” said Pete Carroll post-draft. The size of the holes is open for debate, but here are 3 positions of early concern on the Seahawks’ roster.LEOThinking back to the best days of Seattle pass rush, days when Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril were considered depth, there were clear LEO type pass rushers on the team. The LEO is a defensive end who aligns in wider alignments to the 5-technique defensive end.Typically for the Seahawks, the LEO was around 250lbs and a speedier, bendier EDGE than the 5-technique. Chris Clemons and Avril are prototypes of the position/role. Right now, in 2019, there is no obvious LEO-type on the roster. There’s been Carroll talk of the bigger Shaquem Griffin Color Rush Jersey , 275lb Free Agent addition of Ezekiel Ansah playing the spot. But Ansah is unlikely to even be ready for the first game of the season thanks to a shoulder injury. Plus: he lacks the ability to bend, particularly after hurting his knee in 2017. Ansah still looks like more of a 5-tech.Like when Bruce Irvin played some LEO, other SAM linebackers Cassius Marsh and Barkevious Mingo could fill in at LEO. However, this would only really happen in clear passing situations. The pair lack the traits or skillset to play LEO more regularly.Jacob Martin has more speed and get off than most of the rushers on the team. Yet he was reportedly down to 220lbs by the end of the year and his ability to hold up on early downs is questionable. He is more of a pass rush specialist who plays with nice technique and get off though lacks bend for his profile. At this point in time, the defensive line make-up appears to be emphasized on stopping the run far better than 2018. The key for the roster might be getting into third and longs where they can get into sub-packages, sending Shaquem Griffin and Martin while kicking the powerful bullrush of L.J. Collier inside to bully a guard.Z receiverDoug Baldwin’s retirement was painful for many reasons. Asides from the leadership vacuum it creates, Baldwin was the team’s best receiver. Moreover, he mainly played in a valuable position to the offense: the Z receiver. This being the receiver who lines up off the line of scrimmage or in the slot more, the immediate replacement is unclear. There were deep Yards After Catch and over-the-middle passing issues last year for Seattle’s offense. Partially that was a result of the lack of available underneath options.Baldwin lacked his consistent quick-separation skills due to suiting up hurt. The battle for that type of receiver appears to be between former Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds and 2019 7th-round-pick John Ursua. Both have flashed the crafty route-running ability to succeed in the slot. This preseason will be huge for the pair as they attempt to refine their craft and establish a chemistry with Russell Wilson. 2nd-round wideout D.K. Metcalf is exactly that, an X receiver restricted to the outside. Meanwhile, 4th-round selection Gary Jennings is nearing more of an X too. He certainly doesn’t fit the mold of a quick separator underneath and his best route is the post.Putting Tyler Lockett into the slot more often therefore feels like the obvious move. Indeed, Lockett has spoken about how he is working on his slot releases and routes. Still, when Lockett lines up outside to maximize his ability to separate late on Wilson’s best throw—the deep sideline go—someone needs to be able to step into the slot as the Z receiver.3rd down running backThis at first seems like a bizarre statement, given Seattle spent a first-round pick on Rashaad Penny in 2018. When you consider that the 3rd-down running back role is a different proposition to early downs, demanding excellent pass protection Bradley McDougald Color Rush Jersey , it starts to make more sense. The departure of Mike Davis to the Chicago Bears is lowkey huge. The Seahawks were right not to pay him what Chicago did. That said, Davis was able to get the hard yards running inside zone, defying backfield penetration to find a seam and squeeze through. Davis was also excellent at pass pro. He wasn’t a backup, rather he played the crucial 3rd down running back role in Seattle’s offense. The Seahawks will hope Penny will have gained a better idea of protection schemes given he is entering his second season in the NFL. But if Penny can do that, and stay healthy, he’s likely to form a much more balanced 1-2 punch with Chris Carson, leaving the 3rd down spot open.Travis Homer has the pass-catching ability to make him an interesting proposition. On the other hand, the 6th round pick will require a large adjustment period in pass pro, despite his aptitude. Remember when Seattle signed an ageing Fred Jackson purely for his knowledge of pass pro?J.D. McKissic is fully healthy now and has always been a scintillating target. His pass pro ability is largely unknown too. Whoever ends up grabbing the 3rd down running back role, they better be good. Bad performances at the spot could totally derail Seattle’s hurry-up attack and dramatically hamper the overall offense. Two years removed from his dismissal as Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell has a new job.It was announced on Wednesday that Bevell is headed for the Detroit Lions to replace the wonderfully named Jim Bob Cooter as the team’s OC. Bevell was not hired by any team in 2018, but did have interest from the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars this year before the Lions hired him.The Lions were a pretty disappointing 6-10 this season, which marked Matt Patricia’s first as the team’s head coach. One of the big problems Detroit suffered was a poor offense, ranking 25th in points scored, 23rd in DVOA Brett Hundley Color Rush Jersey , and Matthew Stafford had his fewest passing yards (3,777) since 2010, when he played only three games and had a season-ending injury. Bevell was, of course, Seattle’s OC from 2011-2017, and despite repeatedly fielding top-10 offenses by DVOA under Russell Wilson, he was a lightning rod for criticism even during Seattle’s best years, and then when the offense started to falter in his last two seasons, the Seahawks let him go. Patricia and Bevell certainly have a history of competing against each other. The Russell Wilson revolution started with Seattle beating New England in Patricia’s first year as Patriots DC, then Patricia exacted revenge with the play that shall not be named at Super Bowl XLIX, only for Bevell to return fire with Wilson torching the Patriots defense for 300+ yards and three touchdowns in a 31-24 win in Foxboro. That was New England’s only loss all season with Tom Brady starting. Now Patricia and Bevell are on the same coaching staff, and in need of the offense to be fixed up pretty heavily. Patricia’s first season was a major step down from the end of the Jim Caldwell era, so he might be one of the names on the hot seat entering next season.
