SOCHI, Russia -- Team Canadas best players brought their best game and left with gold. On the worlds biggest stage, Jonathan Toews and Sidney Crosby made good on their strong tournaments and controversial roster pick Chris Kunitz sealed the victory as Canada won its second straight Olympic gold medal in mens hockey with a 3-0 win over Sweden on Sunday. Canada did not trail at any point in the final or over the course of the entire tournament and finished as the first undefeated gold medallist since the Soviet Union in 1984 in Sarajevo, beating Norway, Austria, Finland, Latvia, the United States and Sweden along the way. Until Sunday, Toews and Crosby were two of Canadas best players through the first five games but did not have a goal to show for it. Canadian coach Mike Babcock brushed off concerns about a lack of offence from his forwards, figuring they would come but hoping the stars wouldnt "run out of time." Toews, who opened the scoring with a deflection in the first period, and Crosby, who beat Henrik Lundqvist on a breakaway in the second, delivered just in time. Putting up two goals meant Sweden would have had to score as many goals in the third period as Canada gave up in its first five games of the Olympics. That defensive dominance continued against Sweden, which was without first-line centre Nicklas Backstrom, a late scratch. NHL stars accustomed to more offensive roles continued to display the kind of hard-working defensive intensity Babcock needed out of them, limiting Swedens scoring chances in the process. Goaltender Carey Price made 24 saves for his second straight shutout to cap off his impressive tournament in which he allowed just three goals in five starts. By beating Sweden, Canada became the first back-to-back gold-medal winner since the NHL began sending its players in 1998. It was the first time Canada won gold in two straight Games since 1948 and 1952. And this didnt take a fortunate bounce Quality chances came fast and furious in the games first few minutes. Crosby generated the first one 57 seconds in when he batted the puck down and found Patrice Bergeron for a shot from between the circles that Lundqvist got in front of. Canadas Jamie Benn and Swedens Niklas Kronwall traded shots before Bergeron picked off a pass from Johnny Oduya three minutes in and shot it right into Lundqvist. Swedens best chance of the first period was a minute later, when Gustav Nyquists shot from close range hit the left post behind Price. Canadas starter looked behind him to see the puck inches from the goal line before covering it up. Bergeron continued his tremendous start by shooting off the shaft of Lundqvists stick and hitting the post 11 minutes in. That helped Canada turn the tide after being on the receiving end for a handful of shifts. It was the line of Patrick Marleau, Jeff Carter and Toews that has been together the longest that got Canada on the board at the 12:55 mark. Carter skated down the right wing almost to the goal-line and found Toews streaking to the net. Able to keep his stick free from Patrik Berglund, Toews got it on the puck and deflected it off the inside of Lundqvists right pad and in. With Martin St. Louis inserted onto the fourth line in place of Patrick Sharp, Canada generated a couple of scoring chances and got a power play after Matt Duchene drew a penalty on Swedish defenceman Jonathan Ericsson. Unable to score in those two minutes, Canada went on the kill late in the first into the second after a Kunitz high-sticking penalty and got the job done. Canada had the lions share of chances throughout the second period, save for a couple of opportunities by Loui Eriksson and Erik Karlsson, who came into the day tied for the tournament lead in scoring. Karlsson also made a good stick check on Crosby to thwart the captain in open ice. But Crosby wasnt going to be denied at the 15:43 mark, when he poked the puck away from Ericsson at Canadas blue-line and blew right by Alexander Steen to get a breakaway. Crosby had just enough time to think, go backhand and bank the puck off Lundqvists left pad an into the net. It didnt have the drama of Crosby beating Ryan Miller for the golden goal in Vancouver four years ago, but as he raised his arms in the air it looked like Canada couldnt be beaten on this day. Kunitz, who made the team because of his natural chemistry with Crosby, did it all by himself to provide Canada with breathing room. Kunitz took the puck away from Daniel Sedin, skated over the blue-line and beat Lundqvist clean at the 9:04 mark of the third period. Because Canada gave up just three goals all tournament, that set off quite the celebration on the bench. Eleven players, including backup goaltender Roberto Luongo, won gold for the second straight Olympics. Crosby, Toews, Rick Nash, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Marleau, Bergeron, Duncan Keith, Shea Weber and Drew Doughty got to celebrate twice. Some of the biggest contributors in getting Canada to the final came from newcomers, including Carter and Benn. But two of the three goal-scorers against Sweden -- Crosby and Toews -- were the same ones who scored to beat the United States in Vancouver in 2010. NOTES -- With Backstrom out, Sweden inserted defenceman Henrik Tallinder into the lineup because it did not have an extra forward. The Swedes were already without captain Henrik Zetterberg because of a herniated disk. ... Canada had no lineup surprises, scratching injured forward John Tavares and healthy defenceman P.K. Subban along with third goaltender Mike Smith. ... Cheap Cowboys Jerseys . Hattestad managed to avoid the carnage midway through the mens final, as a crash took out three skiers, essentially leaving two men vying for gold. The Norwegian posted a time of 3:38.39, outlasting Swedens Teodor Peterson, who took silver with a time of 3:39. https://www.cowboysjerseysale.com/ . Wholesale Cowboys Jerseys . There were no real chances until Augsburg broke the deadlock through Raul Bobadilla in the 33rd minute. Frankfurt failed to clear a cross and Bobadilla slotted home from close range at the far post.CALGARY -- The man who gave the host country one of its most memorable moments of the 2010 Winter Olympics faces long odds to compete at the next Winter Games. Jon Montgomerys gold medal in skeleton at the Whistler Sliding Centre and his subsequent auctioning off of a pitcher of beer in the village square elevated him to folk-hero status. But the 34-year-old from Russell, Man., might not make the 2014 team for Sochi, Russia, in February. Montgomerys results the last season and a half have yet to meet Bobsleigh Canada Skeletons qualification criteria. He needs to hit the ball out of the park and also have little luck in the four races he has left to qualify before Jan. 19. "Unfortunately for me, Im fighting an uphill battle in that regard," Montgomery said Wednesday in Calgary. "I would guess the way things have gone it would be nothing short of winning the four races before that deadline." Mellisa Hollingsworth of Eckville, Alta., Calgarys Sarah Reid and John Fairbairn and Eric Neilson of Kelowna, B.C., were introduced Wednesday as Canadas skeleton athletes for Sochi. Canada can qualify a third man and a third woman for Sochi in January, according to head coach Duff Gibson. Should Canada gain those berths, Montgomery is up against Dave Greszczyszyn of Burlington, Ont., for the final spot on the mens team. It will come down to points earned in races. Greszczyszyn is currently ranked 23rd in the world and Montgomery 25th with 32 points separating them. Montgomery didnt qualify in fall selection races for the World Cup team. Hes competing on the secondary Intercontinental Cup circuit where results are worth fewer points than World Cup results. Greszczyszyn will continue to race World Cups. "Dave will be earning twice as many points for his results on World Cup than I will be on IC," Montgomery said. "If I win all four races and Dave gets 13th in his races hell beat me out in points." If the two men end up close or tied in points, it could come down to coachs discretion, which Gibson doesnt relish. The 2006 Olympic champion hopes the sliders sort it out themselves so he can avoid that painful decision. "By delaying our third selection until we know there is a third Canadian spot allows them to separate themselves based on performance, rather than us having to make a subjective choice," Gibson said. Montgomery will race twice in Whistler, B.C., on the track of his Olympic triumph before a pair of races in Park City, Utah, in January. "Im always optimistic," he said. "Ill work until the cows come home for any kind of a chance. Im not going to worry about the race results before they happen. "Im going to be worried about the next run, the next inch, the next corner. If I get ahead of that, Im not focused on whats important, which is the things I can control right now. "I wont bbe defined by my failures and this is hardly a failure yet.dddddddddddd" Montgomery has yet to bond with the sled he built from scratch when he took the 2011-12 season off from racing. The first World Cup after the 2010 Olympics was in Whistler and Montgomery won there. But he didnt finish on the podium again that season. Unwilling to race on a sled that got him wins on just one track in the world and looking ahead to Sochi, Montgomery worked with the metal construction company Standens on a new sled. The move hasnt translated into success on the track. Montgomery needed four top-six results in World Cups the last season and a half to automatically qualify for Sochi. He was sixth once in 2012-13 and was at a major disadvantage this season not qualifying for the World Cup. Montgomery doesnt regret the season he took off or the move to a new sled. Hes sure there would be no chance of beating Latvian skeleton superstar Martin Dukars or Russian slider Alexander Tretiakov, who are co-favourites for gold in Sochi, if he didnt make the change. "The sled that Ive got right now is better than the sled I used to be on," Montgomery said. "Theres no question. The only unfortunate part, and the reason why I was so successful in 2010, was because that old sled was like an extension of my body. "When I was competing in 2010 in Vancouver, that sled Id been on for eight years. I knew exactly how it would react to every single situation I was presented with. Im not there with my Standen sled. I havent had the time to get comfortable with it yet." And its not a simple matter of going back to his former sled, he says. Montgomery hasnt been on it for three years and his body would have to re-learn it. There isnt time for equipment tinkering now. Montgomery says he was the fastest Canadian on the Sochi track during an international training week in the fall. "I was the fastest Canadian athlete by a good bit, but thats neither here nor there," he said. "Its disappointing for me not to be given the benefit of the doubt of that leadership, that past performance proof that Im maybe the best person for the job, but Im in this situation by my own doing. "I cant blame anybody. If youre expecting to be given consideration based on past performance, youre kidding yourself." Montgomery took the risks he did because he wanted another Olympic medal. "I was searching for that special thing I knew I would have to do to be a medallist this go around," Montgomery explained. "Ive got no interest in becoming a two-time Olympian. My interest was always I wanted to do everything in my power to go there and defend my Olympic gold medal, our Olympic gold medal. "Ive got zero regrets. I know I created the bed Im sleeping in, but Im only disappointed. Disappointed is fleeting. Regret is lasting." ' ' '

Malelane, South Africa - Charl Schwartzel fired a 4-under-par 68 on Sunday to successfully defend his Alfred Dunhill Championship title. Schwartzel finished 72 holes at 17-under 271 for his ninth European Tour victory and third at this event, having secured his maiden win here in 2005. "Its always nice to get a win and get some confidence up," said the 29-year- old Schwartzel. Richard Finch, playing on a sponsors invite after failing to retain his card at the end of the 2013 season, shot a 70 at Leopard Creek Country Club and ended alone in second place at 13-under 275. Simon Dyson (67), Ross Fisher (69) and Romain Wattel (71) shared third place at 10-under, one shot ahead of Soren Hansen, who carded a 71 and took solo sixth at minus-9. Magnus A. Carlsson (66) and Simon Wakefield (68) tied for seventh at 8-under, while Danny Willett (69) and Warren Abery (68) shared ninth at 7-under. Last week, Schwartzel coughed up the lead during the final round of the South African Open Championship, stumbling to a triple bogey and a double bogey en route to a tie for fourth place. Such was not the case on Sunday, although Finch managed to threaten early, as the Englishman erased Schwartzels overnight lead with birdies at Nos. 1 and 3. After four straight pars to open, Schwartzel awoke with a deft tee shot to tap-in range at the par-3 fifth, which he converted for birdie and a 1-stroke lead. That margin held at the turn, with the duo matching birdies at the sixth and eighth, where Schwartzel holed from 20 feet. Finch failed to keep pace during the inward stretch, however, as he bogeyed the 11th and fell behind by a pair after an errant drive led to a penalty drop. Schwartzel pushed his advantage to three shots with a birdie from eight feet at the 13th and the tournament was all but decided at the next, where Finchs approach from a fairway bunker hit rocks on the edge of the water and landed in a bush, leading to a double-bogey 6. Schwartzel made par there, extending his lead to five strokes, and although Finch birdied the 15th, the South African cruised home, parring out to cap his bogey-free victory lap. "He got off to a fantastic start and mine was a little shaky," Schwartzel said of his playing partner Finch. "I know with this golf course out of experience that its a long way from over and you just have to keep hitting good shots." NOTES: Schwartzel became the first player to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship three times. In addition to his three wins at this event, Schwartzel was runner-up in the 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011 seasons ... Stokes will miss out on playing at his county home ground of Emirates Riverside on Friday, as well as the third and final Test at Lords on June 9, after aggravating a knee injury in Englands first-Test win at HeadingleyEngland will miss him, everything about him, said Sky Sports pundit Cork said of Stokes, who underwent surgery on Tuesday. Not just his batting, or his bowling. You cant just pick out one thing, thats why theyre called all-rounders.He is an excellent cricketer. His ability - up there with the very best. He can change the game, and not just with one aspect. Ben Stokes celebrates scoring a double hundred for England against South Africa in Cape Town Look at what he did in the winter against South Africa, with that magnificent double century at Cape Town; and the Ashes last year, with that superb catch at Trent Bridge - he is a difference maker. Its a massive blow, because he has been one of the main reasons why Englands Test cricket has gone well of late, although given how poor Sri Lanka have been, its perhaps not as big a hole to fill for England as it usually would be.But you dont want to miss out on games, it doesnt matter who youre playing against and its a big blow for Stokes personally, especially coming off the back of the disappointment of the last over of the World T20. Ben Stokes is consoled by England T20 captain Eoin Morgan after defeat in the World T20 final Chris Woakes has been picked as Stokkes replacement in the squad, with the Warwickshire man celebrating his call-up by taking an astonishing 9-36 in his sides Spescavers County Championship game with Durham.dddddddddddd.Cork believes Woakes can fill in adequately if England chose him over the extra bowler in the squad, Nottinghamshires Jake Ball.Theyre big shoes to fill, said Cork. But I dont think there was anyone else other than Woakes they could have picked at the moment. He was the obvious choice. Chris Woakes has been among the wickets for Warwickshire before joining up with England Its all about consistency of selection - Woakes has been around the England side in one-day cricket or Tests for a while. He isnt a like-for-like replacement, because I dont think hes as good a cricketer. But he is a gutsy player, who perhaps has a point to prove, having only played six Test matches. Some say he doesnt bowl quick enough, but thats a load of rubbish. I genuinely believe he has got ability, and if he gets the nod ahead of Ball, Im sure hed do a job and be successful. That will be Englands decision, they might decide it is time to see what Ball can do, but for the balance of the side, Woakes would be my choice at the moment.Stokes is a big miss, but no matter who you lose as a side, you have to adapt. Its not the end of the world for this England side without Stokes. SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Just because the Sacramento Kings were familiar with Tyreke Evans didnt mean they could stop him. The former NBA Rookie of the Year made a memorable return to Sacramento, scoring a season-high 25 points and adding 12 assists to help the New Orleans Pelicans snap a four-game losing streak with a 113-97 win over the Kings on Monday night. "I know they have no shot blockers, so I was attacking every chance I got," said Evans, who made 7 of 14 shots and hit 11 of 12 free throws after coming off the bench. "Im quick enough to take it to the basket. Thats what I do best. I wanted to be aggressive." Known for his slashing style of play and his uncanny ability to get to the rim in four seasons with the Kings, Evans stayed true to his game, bypassing perimeter shots in favour of going to the hoop. He also added six rebounds and three steals. "He got wherever he wanted to go. Nobody could keep in front of him and thats how he gets to the rim," Kings coach Michael Malone said. "If our guys didnt think he would try to come into this arena and get off, then I question their IQ. He played here and hes going to come here and try to show everybody what were missing. And he did." Evans averaged 17.5 points in his four seasons with the Kings. He joined the Pelicans in the off-season as part of a three-team trade and subsequently signed a four-year, $44 million contract. The Pelicans pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Kings 36-23 to salvage their only victory on a five-game road trip. Evans was a major factor in the second half, scoring 13 points. "I just told the guys that this is just about us getting stops and our defence had to prevail in the fourth quarter and I thought it did," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. DeMarcus Cousins had 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Kings, who committed 22 turnovers in losing for the sixth time in eight games. Isaiah Thomas had 21 points and Marcus Thornton had 19. Rudy Gay made 2-of -12 shots and scored 11 points. "First of all, we didnt get stops," Kings guard Isaiah Thomas said. "Secondly, we didnt dial in on that end of the floor and he made every play. He scored, he passed, and he did what he wanted." Anthony Davis had 21 points and 11 rebounds for New Orleans. Jrue Holiday had 17 points and 10 assists, and Eric Gordon also had 17 points. Ryan Anderson, who grew up in the Sacramento region, had a difficult evening trying to contain Cousins at the defensive end. Anderson went to the bench with five fouls at the 8:17 mark in the fourth quarter. The Pelicans leading scorer missed 3 of 9 shots and had eight points. ST. LOUIS -- Lance Lynn threw a five-hit shutout in his first career complete game and the St. Louis Cardinals got home runs from Allen Craig and Matt Holliday in a 6-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. Holliday and Matt Adams had three hits and an RBI apiece and Craig drove in two runs. The Cardinals have won 10 of 13, shaking off a 12-inning loss in the series opener, and ended the Yankees three-game road winning streak that matched their best of the year. David Phelps (1-2) pitched in his hometown for the first time and allowed three earned runs in six innings. Two infield errors contributed to two unearned runs in the Cardinals breakout four-run third. Derek Jeter got a standing ovation before each at-bat, just like in the opener. He was 0 for 3 with a walk. Adams leads the National League with 22 multi-hit games, Holliday has reached safely in all 23 home games and Craig has a team-high 15 RBIs this month. Lynn (6-2) struck out two and walked three, topping his previous career best of eight innings on April 25, 2012 at Chicago against the Cubs. He retired the side in order for the third time in the ninth inning, finishing with 126 pitches. The Yankees were shut out for just the second time, going 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position and stranding two runners twice. The Cardinals batted around in the third with Adams double the lone run-producing hit. Craig reached on a bases-loaded RBI groundout when first baseman Kelly Johnson gloved an offline throw from Jeter but then lost the ball attempting a sweeping tag, and two runs scored on Jhonny Peraltas grounder that scooted under second baseman Brian Roberts glove. Craigs fifth homer ticked off right fielder Alfonso Sorianos glove at the wall in the fifth. Holliday greeted reliever Alfredo Aceves with his third of the season leading off the seventh. The Yankees opened with a big play on defence, with centre fielder Jacoby Ellsburys running grab steps from the wall to rob leadoff man Matt Carpenter of extra bases in the first. Adams stretched to full extension keeping his foot on the bag at first on Roberts groundout to end the second. Rookie second baseman Kolten Wong made three nice plays, outrunning Ellsbury to first after fielding a grounder that Adams also chased, turning a smash by Yangervis Solarte into a double play ball in the fourth, and diving to snare Phelps foul pop-up in the fifth. NOTES: Cardinals Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog, recovering from a hip injury, was among those in a sellout crowd of 45,202, the teams 12th of the season. ... Part of the process for the San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker to rejoin the team following a five-week stint in rehab included a verbal commitment to the NFL that he would stay out of trouble and keep clean. "I think any time we could all look into our lives and find something we need to work on," Smith said Tuesday, seemingly relaxed. "Ive taken my time and Ive done that." A clean-cut Smith -- hair trimmed from his previous long, curly cut -- returned to the 49ers locker room after his long absence and five missed games to cheers from teammates who chanted his first name. Everybody knows what he means to this franchise and defence -- and the 49ers are hopeful he is as healthy as he looks and ready to return to the field as soon as Sundays home game with Carolina. "Im getting there. Every days just a step closer to getting to where I want to be," Smith said at his locker after practice. "Ive gotten a lot of support, from my family, friends, organization, teammates and everything. And it really says a lot that people care about me outside the field and they care about me as a person." Smith had been on an indefinite paid leave of absence before being activated to the 53-man roster Thursday, two days after he turned himself in to Santa Clara County authorities on weapons charges. He met last Wednesday with team officials. The fearsome pass-rusher is in shape despite a couple of extra pounds gained during his stint at an in-patient treatment centre for substance abuse. He was at a facility outside California, he said, while declining to offer further details. He said he returned to the Bay Area on Oct. 28 after entering rehab in late September -- and he was away for his 24th birthday Sept. 25. Defensive teammate and fellow linebacker Patrick Willis is among those who sent periodic text messages to Smith during his time away. "Aldon has been a guy since he came in who has been very productive for our defence, has been a playmaker for our defence," Willis said. "To get him back is a good thing, then, too, with his absence we were able to develop some depth with some of the other guys. Its really going to be a strong point for us. When you have a guy such as Aldon with his talent, the biggest thing we can do for him is just let hhim know were here for him, let him know that were his teammates, but the main thing is just let him grow on his own.ddddddddddddquot; Smith played in a 27-7 home loss to the Colts on Sept. 22 and had five tackles just two days after he was arrested and jailed on suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession. He apologized for his behaviour after the game then later announced he would leave for treatment. San Francisco (6-2) has won five straight games in impressive fashion without him. Also in September, Smith and former teammate Delanie Walker were named in a lawsuit filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court by a Northern California man who said he was shot at a party at Smiths house on June 29, 2012. Smith, selected seventh overall in the 2011 draft out of Missouri, had previously been arrested on suspicion of DUI in January 2012 in Miami shortly after the 49ers lost in the NFC championship game. Now, Smith is moving forward. Hes thrilled to be reunited with not only his team but also his 10-month-old son, Aulis. "He looks good, man," running back Frank Gore said. "Im a big fan of Aldon, a young guy who has the potential to be one of the best at the position. Im happy hes back with the family. I know he can help our team, so thats great." While Smith is scheduled for court appearances each of the next two Tuesdays, he expects to be in practice. Smith was charged Oct. 9 with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from that party at his home in June 2012. "Of course, I didnt want to be away from the sport I love. But it was good for me to get away and get my mind together and work, like I say, just to get to the positive spot I need to be at," he said. "I caught some of the games, some that were broadcast over there. So I was able to keep up with the guys and chime in here and there and wish them good luck." Smith had a franchise-record 19 1/2 sacks last season for the NFC champions. He has 4 1/2 sacks and 18 tackles over three games in 2013. "Im just taking it one day at a time, getting back here, being around the guys and just getting my life back at home," Smith said. Also Tuesday, leading 2012 wideout Michael Crabtree was cleared to resume practicing following May surgery to repair a torn right Achilles tendon. The 49ers now have three weeks to activate him. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Josh Beckett has pitched his home games in Los Angeles for almost two years now, and hed almost forgotten what it was like to sit through a rain delay. He handled this one with no problem The right-hander waited more than 2 hours to make his start Tuesday night, but once he got on the mound, he was on top of his game. Beckett allowed two hits in six shutout innings, Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run single and the Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-1. "Sitting around today was tough," the 34-year-old Beckett said. "Im not 23 anymore. I was ready to go at 7:10. I spent a lot of time in the weight room trying to stay loose. I felt fine." Beckett (4-3), who had endured two consecutive 2-1 losses since his no-hitter May 25 in Philadelphia, finished with seven strikeouts and one walk. He also hit a batter with a pitch. "Actually, I felt like it was his cleanest game since the no-hitter," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "The ball was coming out better. He had a better changeup, and he kept the ball down." Beckett echoed Mattinglys assessment. "I felt like it was a clean outing," he said. He also enjoyed better support from his offence, which scored more runs in one inning than it had in his previous two starts combined. Yasiel Puig, Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier and Justin Turner led the Los Angeles lineup with two hits apiece. Beckett got into the act with a single of his own for the Dodgers, who have won three straight and four of five. "Joshs performance today is what hes been giving us all year," Ethier said. "We havent been producing many runs for him." Mike Leake, reached for a season-high five runs in his previous start Thursday against San Francisco, allowed five more and a season-high nine hits in 5 1-3 innings. Leake (3-6), who lost seven games last season, had seven strikeouts and one walk. "It was a weird night," said Leake, bothered by a stiff neck in his previous three starts. "I missed some spots. I got some groundballs, but they found holes. I didnt do my job today." Reds first baseman Joey Votto, activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game after missing 23 games with a strained quadriceps in his left knee, went 1 for 3 with a single, two strikeouts and a walk. After the start was delayed by rain for 2 hours, 5 minutes, the Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the second on Gonzalezs leadoff double and Ethiers one-out double. Beckett helped himself in a three-run fifth after Turner led off with a single. With one out, the pitcher faked a bunt and hit a chopper over charging third baseman Todd Frazier for his third hit in 23 at-bats this season. "I saw him charging," Beckett said. "He was playing so shallow already. I took a shot." Turner scored on Dee Gordons double, and Ramirez drove in both runners with a single to right field. That pretty much gave Los Angeles control. The largest deficit overcome by the Reds to win this season is two runs. Cincinnati manager Bryan Price was impressed with the Dodgers approach. "They did a nice job of putting the ball in play," Price said. "They ran some balls through the infield. They had enough team speed to get some good reads off the bat and score off that line drive to right." Los Angeles added a run in the sixth on Matt Kemps one-out walk and back-to-back singles by Ethier and Turner, who has four consecutive multihit games. Puig singled, stole second and scored on Gonzalezs second double in the seventh. Ethier is hitting .467 (7 for 15) with six RBIs against Leake. The Reds avoided being shut out on Jay Bruces leadoff double, Devin Mesoracos infield single and Zack Cozarts one-out RBI single in the seventh. Mesoraco snapped a career-worst, 0-for-19 slump. Lucas Duda hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 11th, lifting the Mets over the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Sunday in the third straight meeting between the teams to run long. The Mets and Phillies split a pair of 14-inning games the previous two days, combining to play nearly 11 hours. Duda came off the bench in the bottom of the 10th at first base, then connected in the 11th to help the Mets win for the fifth time in six games. "We are getting tired, (but) they are great to win," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "They lift the spirits up and it does get the energy up, even though youre tired physically. You know you can win these kinds of games." Ryan Howard hit an early two-run homer for the Phillies. Marlon Byrd hit a solo shot in the 11th. "In close games, extra-inning games, not to be able to just get the job done is very frustrating," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. Josh Edgin (1-0) struck out the side in the 10th. Jenrry Mejia held on for his sixth save in as many chances. Phillippe Aumont (0-1), called up prior to the game to provide some help to the tired Philadelphia bullpen, got the first two outs of the 11th. After a walk to Travis dArnaud, Duda hit his eighth home run deep into the seats in left-centre field. "I was lucky enough to square a ball up," Duda said. "I was just trying to hit it hard." Duda did get a respite from not starting, but said all of the innings can take a toll. "Its both physically and mentally draining," he said. "Just continue to go. They have to play, too." The teams conclude their rare five-game series on Monday night. Adding Sundays time of 3 hours, 29 minutes, the first four games have taken 17 hours, 29 minutes over 48 innings, and the teams have employed 46 pitchers. Aumont was one of three relievers promoted by the teams from the minors Sunday. The Phillies also added left-hander Cesar Jimenez while the Mets brought up left-hander Dana Eveland Triple-A. Although neither fiigured into the decision, each teams starter gave the bullpen some rest.dddddddddddd Cole Hamels went seven strong innings for the Phillies, allowing one earned run and six hits. He struck out eight and walked four, though three were intentional. Jonathon Niese tossed eight innings and gave up two runs. His lone mistake came against Howard, who had been 3 for 22 with 10 strikeouts before homering in the fourth for a 2-1 lead. Knowing the Mets bullpen was thin, Nieses game plan was to attack the strike zone early and often. "I was going to pound the zone and they were going to hit me hard early or they were going to get outs early," Niese said. "I wasnt trying to trick guys out there. I wouldnt say it was a burden, but I knew it was important (to go deep in the game) because I knew our bullpen was getting beat up lately." Niese departed after throwing 91 pitches and said he could have gone two more innings if needed. Collins appreciated the outing by his starter. "Tremendous effort by a lot of people starting with Niese," he said. "We needed somebody to go that deep in the game." New York came back with a run in the sixth on Curtis Grandersons sacrifice fly to tie it at 2. The Mets had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Chris Youngs sacrifice fly that scored David Wright. Third baseman Reid Brignac made an over-the-shoulder catch in foul territory, but his strong throw wasnt in time. NOTES: Jimenez pitched a scoreless eighth. ...
